Fashion & psychology
Growing up and even to this day, I am very interested in how the mind works and how as humans we think. Over the past three years the human brain and processing and dealing with emotions has been a topic that I constantly think about. I take these thoughts and feeling towards psychology into my styling with myself and all of my clients.
Fashion has always been something where people can express themselves. I believe that the first thing a person notices about you when they meet you is the clothing you chose to wear that day, for that meeting. Along with your personality, clothing is the main way that you express yourself. I find that many peoples outfits reflect their personality, and that’s great. But when you are in a space where maybe you haven’t decided what you want your personal style to be or how you want to present yourself, it can be extremely difficult to figure out.
If this is you and you are currently struggling with your style and how you want to present yourself to others I want you to do these next steps. Take a piece of paper (don’t do it on your phone, paper is best) and write down your ideal future self. It can be anything from your career, to your personality, to the hobbies you want to have. Now once you’ve done that write down the characteristics you believe that future person has. Are they happy, are they driven and hardworking, are they kind to everyone, do they stand strong on their values and morals? After you’ve done those two things think about the person you just wrote down. How would they show up in life? How are they expressing those characteristics through their clothing?
This is the perfect way in my opinion to start to understand who you want to be and how you want to show that to others. My favourite example of expressing yourself through what you wear is the utilization of a power suit. As a woman wearing a power suit gives off the energy that you are strong, independent and have the power to get sh*t done. Which is the energy that just about every woman in business wants to give off. With that being said their are times where you may want to express yourself differently. Personally in my life I change my outfits based upon how I feel I want to show up that day. When I feel very feminine and soft I want to express that by wearing spring dresses and little heels. When I feel trendy I will try on outfits that much up with current trends and when I need to be taken seriously I will dress for that role as well. Fashion is all about deciding how you need to show up and wearing an outfit that matches that and makes you feel as confident as possible.
